Family Tree Project
Interested in learning more about your Ma'amtagila ancestry and family connections?
Our Knowledge Steward, Matt Ambers, is leading a project to build our Ma'amtagila family trees, bringing together family knowledge, histories, and connections across generations. Whether you have family stories and information to share, questions about your ancestry, or simply want to learn more about how we're all connected, we invite you to take part.
We're planning gatherings in communities from Alert Bay to Victoria between November 29 and December 5, and we'd love your participation. Get in touch if you're interested in participating or contributing to this project: mattambers@hotmail.com.
Youth Clam Harvest
Are you a Ma'amtagila youth interested in joining a clam harvesting trip on our territory? Do you want to learn how to access our lú ʷxiwey?
We are inviting youth to travel with Elders and Knowledge Keepers, learn practical clam harvesting skills, and connect with our territory. Dates will be between November 2026 and January 2027. This is a chance to strengthen our food sovereignty through sharing knowledge and spending time together on the land.
Travel support is available for Ma'amtagila youth. Please get in touch for more information: mayana@maamtagila.ca.
Strengthening Our Traplines
Trapping is an important part of our cultural heritage, food security, and connection to the land. We're working to strengthen community knowledge and capacity so that Ma'amtagila families can continue these practices for generations to come. This includes both practical trapping knowledge and navigating the provincial registration system, including questions about existing traplines, maintaining registrations, and transferring traplines between family members.
This work is being led by Dorothy Hunt (Kwakiutl), who is helping us identify community interests, concerns, and opportunities for training and knowledge sharing. Whether you're a registered trapline holder, have a trapline in your family, or simply want to learn more, we'd like to hear from you! Please contact Dorothy at dotdothh@gmail.com.
Do you have an idea for bringing Ma'amtagila people together? Would you like to help organize a gathering in your area?
We have obtained funding to support several community gatherings between November 2026 and March 2027, and we're looking for people to help make them happen. Gatherings can take place in Victoria, Campbell River, Nanaimo, Fort Rupert, Vancouver, or anywhere else our community members live. We're open to different ideas, whether it's a cultural activity, a workshop, a community meal, or simply an opportunity to reconnect.
Coordinator contracts of $2,500 are available to support the planning and organization of these events.
Interested? Send your ideas or expressions of interest to mayana@maamtagila.ca.
